What your Choice of Cocktail Says About You

Published on

Charles Baudelaire used to say: “A man who drinks only water has a secret to hide from his fellow men”. But it’s not just them. Who said that only behind an Evian or San Pellegrino top secrets might be hiding? Ordering a hyper-posh Cosmopolitan may reveal a concealed sexy side and a fashionista attitude (ever heard of Carrie Bradshaw?), while a classic gin and tonic might show the pristine demeanour of who sips it.

Careful with the shot-mania though, it will instantly reveal your party obsession. Here’s our mini guide to cocktail phenomenology.

1. Vodka and Gin Martini – anyone who orders a Martini possesses an unrivalled elegance. Even the glass where it’s served it’s a must-have accessory when one sits at a bar. We can’t help but think of James Bond (embodiment of style) and its Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred. A Martini drinker is so, not only a charming and elegant person but someone determined, that knows exactly what he/she wants. Hemingway’s favourite cocktail was a ‘simple’ Martini Dry, a truly sophisticated cocktail, with its distinctive gin taste, loved equally by men and women.

2. Tequila Sunrise, Piña Colada, Sex on the Beach - very sweet and sugary cocktails, with exotic and seductive names. Whoever chooses them is exactly like this: a person looking for love, and stability, able to give attention and keen on getting some of this attention back. Usually, this person is also very charming and loves dancing, the beach and every other place where he/she can meet (and seduce) new, interesting people. Which is just perfect...unless you are past your 20’s.

3. Gin Tonic, Vodka Lemonade, Rum & Cola - it is very hard to crack the code of the person drinking a basic mix made of a spirit and a fizzy drink. Behind this cocktail might hide a simple but solitary person, that doesn’t enjoy making new friends. This person probably likes sipping his/her booze without interacting. A classic G&T indicates also a person that doesn’t have many interests and is unpretentious, which is just a euphemism for boring. It’s a whole different story when they order an original gin brand...or maybe they are just trying to impress being their usual hipster-self.

4. Mojito, Caipirinha, Caipiroska - crushed ice cocktails suggest summer! They are fresh, they are sweet, but not too much sweet, served with decorations on the top of the glass. Behind the choice of these cocktails, there’s clearly a joyful person, who loves being surrounded by people and having fun with his/her friends. These drinks meet almost everyone's taste, with recipes that bring our minds to Formentera and the beautiful beach of Copacabana. Then again, if it’s love you are after, avoid people drinking these cocktails. Forewarned is forearmed.

5. Moscow Mule - vodka, spicy ginger beer and lime juice, served in a trendy copper mug. Moscow Mule was the first-ever vodka cocktail and it’s a great choice for both summer and winter thanks to its refreshing lime flavour and gingery punch. Who is ordering it? Usually, someone that wants to be cool and original, but with a refined touch. The hipster alert is just around the corner.
